Toto’s Chess Island
Everything lives on one island. Each landmark is a different way to learn, and the same island is in the app on every screen.

Meet every piece, then castling, en passant, checkmate patterns, forks and pins. Lessons are short, played on small boards, and each chapter ends with a gift for Toto.

Find the winning move! Puzzles come in themes, there’s a puzzle of the day, and a “practise again” shelf collects the ones that didn’t go perfectly.

A rulebook for small hands: how every piece moves, plus the special rules like castling, en passant and promotion. Every card has a “Try me!” button, so children learn by doing, not reading.

Play a friend on one screen, or take on an animal friend that fits your child’s age. A half-played game is saved, and afterwards Toto looks back at the key moments.

Stars, levels, a daily mission of three medals and a streak flame that grows hotter. Trophies and stickers celebrate effort and good chess habits, not just winning.

Pick a buddy, a board look and Toto’s colour. Brothers and sisters each get their own profile on the same device, and setting up takes about a minute.

Toto is always the coach. The animals don’t talk, they just play, and each one is matched to a child’s age. Tap a friend to say hello!
Slow and gentle. Makes friendly mistakes, and sometimes leaves a piece out for you to spot.
tap to say helloClever and quick. Thinks a few moves ahead and sets the odd trap, so kids learn to look before they move.

Meet Toto
Most chess apps show a score or a “best move”. Toto talks to your child in short, kind sentences about what is really happening on the board, in words that fit their age.
Not reading yet? No problem! Every word Toto says in the game is spoken aloud in a real voice, so your child can just listen and play. Grown-ups can turn the voice on or off any time.
The same two voices as in the app. Pick one and tap a line.

One game, every screen
The same island on phones, tablets and the web, so your child can start on one and carry on with another.
The Android and iOS apps are on their way. Tell us where to send one short email the day they are in the stores.
A grown-up’s email, please. We only use it to say the app is ready.
Thank you! We’ll send one email when the app is ready. Meanwhile, Toto is waiting in your browser.

Toto Chess is made for children from about 4 to 10 and up. There are three age groups: Little (4–6), Explorer (7–9) and Champion (10 and up). They change how Toto speaks, how the squares are shown and which animal friend your child plays.
No. The first lesson is “Meet the Pawn”. Lessons go step by step from the pieces, to the rules, to checkmate and simple tactics. You don’t need to know chess to help, because Toto explains everything.
There are no accounts, no ads, no chat and no analytics. A child’s name, progress and games are stored on your device (in the browser, on the web version), and they aren’t sent to us. The privacy page explains this in plain words.
Yes. In the Grown-ups zone you can set a daily play-time limit and a reminder time. Set a PIN too, so your child can’t change them.
It’s the same game running in your browser, so you can try it with nothing to install. On the web, progress is saved in that browser on that device. If you clear the browser’s site data, or use a private window, the progress goes with it. The Android and iOS apps keep progress on the phone or tablet.
Soon. Join the waitlist and we’ll send one email when they’re in the stores. Until then the web version is the full game, free to play.
It is used once, to tell you when the app is ready. We don’t add you to anything else, share it, or use it for ads. Want it removed? Email hello@totochess.app and it’s gone.
Today: any modern web browser on a computer, tablet or phone (Chrome, Safari, Edge or Firefox). Coming: Android phones and tablets, and iPhones and iPads.
Yes. Add each child in the Grown-ups zone. Each child has their own buddy, level, trophies and progress.
The Android and iOS apps are built to be played offline. The web version needs a connection while you play, because it loads Toto’s voice and pictures as it goes.
Each animal plays at its own level: the Turtle is gentle and makes friendly mistakes (it even leaves a piece out now and then for little ones to spot), the Fox is tricky and the Lion is strong. If a child is finding it hard, Toto doesn’t make the animal weaker. He gives more hints and encouragement instead, because learning to lose well is part of learning chess.
The web version is free to play. We’ll share the app store details here, and by email to the waitlist, when the apps launch.
Setting up takes about a minute. Sit with them for the first game, and Toto will take it from there.
