Meet Toto

A coach that explains why

Most chess apps show a score or a “best move”. Toto talks to your child in short, kind sentences about what is really happening on the board, in words that fit their age, and he reads them aloud.

Careful! The Fox can take your knight with a pawn!A warning before the move
Look at your pieces. Is one of them in danger?A hint that asks a question
You saved your bishop. Smart!Praise that says why
Checkmate! You won. Great chess! And a party, of course
A gentle warningBefore a piece is left undefended, Toto says so first, and the child decides.
Hints, not answersA question first, then a glowing piece, then a square. The child still does the thinking.
A look backAfter a game Toto picks the key moments and lets the child “try it” again.
Cheers for effortToto celebrates trying, guarding a piece and keeping going, even after a loss.

Toto has lots of moods, and he shows every one.

Questions

What parents ask

How old does my child need to be?

Toto Chess is made for children from about 4 to 10 and up. There are three age groups: Little (4–6), Explorer (7–9) and Champion (10 and up). They change how Toto speaks, how the squares are shown and which animal friend your child plays.

Does my child need to know chess already?

No. The first lesson is “Meet the Pawn”. Lessons go step by step from the pieces, to the rules, to checkmate and simple tactics. You don’t need to know chess to help, because Toto explains everything.

Is it safe? What about my child’s data?

There are no accounts, no ads, no chat and no analytics. A child’s name, progress and games are stored on your device (in the browser, on the web version), and they aren’t sent to us. The privacy page explains this in plain words.

Can I limit how long my child plays?

Yes. In the Grown-ups zone you can set a daily play-time limit and a reminder time. Set a PIN too, so your child can’t change them.

How is the web version different from the app?

It’s the same game running in your browser, so you can try it with nothing to install. On the web, progress is saved in that browser on that device. If you clear the browser’s site data, or use a private window, the progress goes with it. The Android and iOS apps keep progress on the phone or tablet.

When are the Android and iOS apps coming?

Soon. Join the waitlist above and we’ll send one email when they’re in the stores. Until then the web version is the full game, free to play.

What does the waitlist do with my email?

It is used once, to tell you when the app is ready. We don’t add you to anything else, share it, or use it for ads. Want it removed? Email hello@totochess.app and it’s gone.

Which devices does it work on?

Today: any modern web browser on a computer, tablet or phone (Chrome, Safari, Edge or Firefox). Coming: Android phones and tablets, and iPhones and iPads.

Can brothers and sisters share one device?

Yes. Add each child in the Grown-ups zone. Each child has their own buddy, level, trophies and progress.

Does it work without internet?

The Android and iOS apps are built to be played offline. The web version needs a connection while you play, because it loads Toto’s voice and pictures as it goes.

Does the animal let my child win?

Each animal plays at its own level: the Turtle is gentle and makes friendly mistakes (it even leaves a piece out now and then for little ones to spot), the Fox is tricky and the Lion is strong. If a child is finding it hard, Toto doesn’t make the animal weaker. He gives more hints and encouragement instead, because learning to lose well is part of learning chess.

How much does it cost?

The web version is free to play. We’ll share the app store details here, and by email to the waitlist, when the apps launch.

Toto waving

Ready for their first move?

Setting up takes about a minute. Sit with them for the first game, and Toto will take it from there.
